Sedation Dentistry for Kids

Some parents avoid bringing their son or daughter to the dentist due to the child’s high level of anxiety. This can cause the child to become extremely uncooperative and act in ways that are uncharacteristic for him or her. Fortunately, sedation dentistry is a simple solution to this problem.

O.C. Dental Specialists is happy to work with parents and children to make dental treatment more comfortable for the entire family. Sedation for children is a good option for those gag easily, have had a previous traumatic experience at the dentist, need major treatment, or have a significant mental or physical impairment that prevents them from fully cooperating with the dentist. Infants and older children with a highly anxious personality can benefit from sedation as well.

Pediatric Sedation Options

Available Our dentists may recommend conscious sedation if your child has only mild dental anxiety. Kids weighing under 60 pounds can take an anti-anxiety pill before the appointment while those over 60 pounds can inhale nitrous oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide helps patients feel sleepy and relaxed while remaining conscious the entire time. We typically reserve deep sedation for pediatric patients who cannot cooperate to receive the dental work they need due to age, maturity or anxiety level, or some degree of handicap. Without sedation, these young patients may pose a threat to their own safety or that of our dental team. O.C. Dental Specialists works with a certified and experienced anesthesiologist who will use a combination of medications to put your child into a deep sleep for the duration of the dental appointment.
